DBS Checks Explained: Types, Costs, and Process

Updated 17 September 2026. Guidance links checked against GOV.UK.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check provides criminal-record information for recruitment and other eligible purposes. The level of information depends on the check. This guide explains the main types, where to find current fees and how to check eligibility before applying.

Which type of DBS check is available?

  • Basic: covers unspent convictions and conditional cautions.
  • Standard: includes spent and unspent convictions and cautions, subject to the applicable disclosure rules.
  • Enhanced: adds relevant information held by local police to the standard level.
  • Enhanced with barred lists: also checks the relevant list of people barred from the work.

See the official overview of DBS check types. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different criminal-record-check arrangements.

Check eligibility for the actual role

Do not choose a higher-level check simply because an organisation works in healthcare or with children. The recruiting organisation must assess the role and its activities to establish the appropriate level. Standard and enhanced checks are restricted to eligible roles; eligibility alone does not mean a check is mandatory.

Use the current DBS eligibility guidance and linked eligibility tool before applying. Record who reviewed the requirement and what needs to happen next as part of your recruitment process.

DBS check costs and volunteer applications

Fees can change. Check the current official DBS fee guidance when planning an application. An organisation handling an application may charge a separate administration fee.

Basic checks are charged for volunteers too. Standard and enhanced volunteer checks can be free of the DBS fee when the role and applicant meet the relevant criteria. An unpaid placement or training position does not automatically qualify. Read the official volunteer rules.

Applications and processing times

An individual can apply directly to DBS for a basic check. Other application routes depend on the level and circumstances. Follow the relevant application guidance and complete the required identity steps.

Processing times vary. DBS currently describes an average of three days for basic applications, with some taking longer. This is not a guaranteed completion date or a timetable for enhanced checks. See basic-check applicant guidance for the current process.

Records and follow-up

A DBS certificate has no official expiry date: it reflects the information available when the check was completed. Employers decide when a fresh check is needed and must assess whether an existing certificate is appropriate for a new role. The official employer guide explains repeat checks and the Update Service.

A certificate does not by itself establish someone’s qualifications or guarantee safe practice. Keep recruitment decisions, training and ongoing safeguarding responsibilities in view.
